My Kitchen is the Heart of My Home

The kitchen is the heart of a home, and I think that very fact is what is causing my kitchen renovation to move at a snail’s pace. Every decision is carefully thought out because I imagine the impact to our cooking, entertaining and daily life in our kitchen. Life (and memories!) happens in our kitchen.

Here’s a reminder of what my kitchen looked like in August before we started on the renovation.

Daniel and I often get home from work, put our keys on the peninsula area of the kitchen and hang out in the kitchen as he cooks and I unload the dishwasher or sort through mail. I talk about my crazy day, and he listens and offers his input. Pee Wee also lays around the kitchen hoping for a taste of whatever is on the menu.

On the weekends, the kitchen is where Daniel listens to post-football game recaps as he makes his signature chili and where I listen to podcasts and bake delicious treats in the oven that make our house smell AMAZING. As a blogger, my kitchen is also my office when I am testing recipes and taking photographs to share with you all…like this tasty cheesecake below.

I have great memories of prepping desserts and brunch with my BFF’s in the kitchen during girl’s day, and I’ll never forget our first Thanksgiving in our house and the blissful chaos that comes with having 20 people in and out of your kitchen. So this kitchen renovation that started as a total whim in mid-August is now at a standstill because I want to get this right for the long haul. I want the cabinet color, appliances and function to all work together in harmony, and I finally have my own home to make this all happen in. That truly means a lot to me.

I want really great, long lasting, quality appliances like the GE appliances I had while renting my fancy student apartment in Austin or like the ones my fellow friends who are fabulous at entertaining and cooking have. They all seem to have GE Appliances that are easy to use and look beautiful.  Quality appliances can make cooking easier even for people like me who don’t love to cook (I’m more of a baker).

Appliances are definitely an investment, but you can enter to win some in the Our American Kitchen Sweepstakes which runs through October 13. You can also watch some inspiring and touching stories on the GE Appliances YouTube channel about how kitchens help bring people together and strengthen family bonds.

My next step in the kitchen renovation is selecting a cabinet color that will work with the appliances we purchase to upgrade our kitchen, and I’ll finally have a free weekend to play with paint this weekend.

Even if we don’t upgrade our appliances immediately, it’s important to think about them now to ensure everything is cohesive and gives us the look and features we need as a family. I guess I just finally had that “ah-ha!” moment I’ve been waiting for that makes me feel like I can do this, even if it’s not all at once. It will all eventually come together to create our dream kitchen.

And that’s a pretty great thing. <3 Be back tomorrow with my take on my camera bag purchase that I told you all about on my Facebook page. xoxo!
