House Hunting in Corpus Christi Round 2

You know how on Fixer Upper they give each house a cutesy name like “Lipstick on a Pig Tudor”, “Dilapidated Roofless Bungalow” or “Shiplap Dreams are Made Here”? (Those are all made up, but are totally plausible.)

Well, I bring to you Torrente house…it’s named after the fact it’s on Torrente Street in Corpus Christi.

My creativity knows no bounds.

We’ve been scouting houses and neighborhoods in Corpus Christi because we want to narrow down where exactly we want to live and what type of house we want. Since we won’t be seriously looking until July/August and don’t want to waste a realtor’s time, we mostly break into visit new construction, go to open houses, or simply do neighborhood drive throughs and get weird looks from people.

I wrote about this other house a few months back, and then after really doing some research, the builder has terrible warranty reviews and the location would add about 5-10 minutes to my commute. So Rancho Vista is off the list.

We went to an open house this past weekend, and the house was a mess. PEOPLE. If your house is on the market, clean up yo’ stuff. They also had their cat running around, and it was just no good, BUT their agent could tell we were not digging the house and told us about Torrente house.

On paper, Torrente house is 1650 square, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, with a 2 car garage and covered patio. It is roughly 250 square feet smaller than our former Beeville home, and that makes us happy

Torrente was right around the corner from Messy Cat House, so the agent was nice enough to let us go inside and take a look around. The home won’t be finished for another month or two, and I doubt it’ll be on the market once we’re ready. <insert sad face here>

We fell in love with the house, and I don’t say this lightly because at this point Daniel and I have easily seen or driven by well over 50 houses. We know within seconds whether or not it’s a contender.

This house has a grand, yet small entrance. The laundry room and garage entrance is that left door you see.

Once you enter, you’re immediately in a large open concept space. This photo is taken from the living room.

The dining room is off to the immediate left when you walk in. The dining room is a room that I loved in our former house, but truthfully it was mostly “blog” pretty more so than an everyday space for us. In our next dining room, I’ll try to implement more of an everyday/casual luxe and likely also do a wall of built-ins so it can function as my office (this way I don’t waste a bedroom).

I love the potential of the window area…it could be a bench or a place for Pee Wee to bark at squirrels.

The kitchen is directly in front of the dining room and features a massive island that could easily fit 6 counter height stools, which would be ideal for Thanksgiving and Christmas to have our home filled with our family and friends. I really don’t like the shiny brown kitchen cabinets, but I can easily stain or paint them.

To the right of the kitchen is the massive living room with soaring and stunning ceiling. The living room has big windows looking into the backyard that let in plenty of natural light. That arched walkway leads to the master bedroom.

The master bedroom has a giant hashtag in the ceiling and is a little smaller than we’d like for our massive king bed, but it’d work.

Overall, we love the house (minus the very beige walls and shiny kitchen cabinets) and now we know what kind of layout and features we’d like. It’s been really fun to be looking at houses again, and it makes me think fondly of how much fun it’ll be to be in a house again with my boys. It’ll be fun to paint and do DIY things again (Daniel is less enthused about DIY projects, truth be told).

But for now, we’re enjoying not having DIY projects and not being responsible for repairs to anything.

What do you all think of Torrente house?

We've given it some thought, but don't want to deal with a construction loan. :-/

I love this house, of course, I love the black cabinets, maybe not shiny, but black. I'm going to paint my kitchen cabinets black as soon as I possibly can. I've already painted one of my china cabinets black and am really loving it !. I've been searching for a complete tour of your old house dining room after the blue paint, can find the sitting area (a little bit of it), but can't find the rest of the dining room, also, what happened to your chinoiserie makeover?? I know you are so anxious to get back into a "house" again, but at least you live in Corpus ! I'm in love with your pink rug by the way.:)

Hi Kathryn! I got a new job and moved shortly after those posts, so the full makeover never happened. I do have some photos of the full room after the navy paint- I may dig them up for a quick before and after. The cabinets sadly are an ugly brown and not black. I'd love a black and brass kitchen!

Nice house and love the ceilings. May I suggest you inquire if the builder has plans to start this particular model in the next couple of months? The timing would be good for you and get in early enough to pick colors and finishes….crazy to redo new cabinet finishes in a new home. Good Luck. Dee

Hi Dee! I agree- I definitely don't want to redo cabinets in a new home. 🙂

Hi Kathryn! Yes, they are. I bought them on Etsy awhile back. The seller's shop can be found here: I love my pillows and they print looks vibrant. 🙂
