DIY Blush, Gold & White Greek Key Chair Wreaths

Holiday wreaths on the back of Dayna counter stools- the blush, white and gold with greek key accents are gorgeous and classy! | via monicawantsit.com

I have had this project photographed for awhile, and I've been DYING to share. I love how easy, affordable and glam this project is. So if you have chairs or barstools to cover, this tutorial is for you!

When I bought our Dayna counterstools, I knew I would have to decorate them for the holidays because HOW COULD I NOT?! They're gorgeous and the open back is begging for some holiday zhush.

I knew I wanted to hang small wreaths on the back incorporating this year's Christmas decor theme-- I searched high and low for the perfect size wreath at a bargain price and found my perfect match at Dollar Tree. At Home had some that were comparable size at about $10 each for just the wreath. Instead I doubled up the Dollar Tree wreath and had me a $2 version. Much better. Michael's does have some this same size for $2 on sale, so that's another option.

I could go on and on about how much I love them, but I know you're here to see a tutorial, so I'll get to it. I'll preface this by saying it's going to seem complicated, but it's not. It's essentially a decorated wreath, a hanging loop and a bow. You can do this.

It's easy to make this wreath fit your own color scheme by swapping ornaments and ribbon styles. I included really precise ribbon measurements so you can achieve the same look I have going on. Happy crafting!

DIY Blush, Gold & White Chair Wreath

Supplies for ONE Wreath:
  • Two, 15" Dollar Tree Wreaths
  • 3 garland ties (Sold as a pack of 12 at Dollar Tree)
  • Green floral wire
  • Scissors
  • 5-6 medium ornaments from Dollar Tree (2" size, Gold & White)
  • 6-8 small ornaments (1" size, Silver & Gold)
  • Hot glue gun
  • Large blush poinsettia flowers cut from the stem (Michael's)
  • Small gold poinsettia flowers cut from the stem (Dollar Tree)

Instructions:
  1.  Stack the wreaths on top of each other and secure to one another using three garland ties or green floral wire.
  2.  Fluff. Make sure to fluff the branches forward and outward since you'll want the wreath to lay flat on the chair back.
  3.  Hot glue the large poinsettia in the bottom left area and hot glue the gold one next to it.
  4.  Hot glue the ornament tops to the ornaments- you'll thank me later.
  5.  Layout your ornaments on the wreath to see how you want them scattered. I decided on a layout and used this layout on all the wreaths for congruity. Do what looks best to you!
  6.  Make sure to leave a gap/don't place ornaments in the top center for the loop and bow.
  7.  Once you have the layout set, thread the individual clusters of ornaments together using floral wire and tie onto the wreath. I prefer this method so at the end of the season I can take the ornaments off the wreath and reuse in some other fashion. You could also simply hot glue them to the wreath if you find that easier.
  8.  Repeat for any other wreaths.

Instructions:
  1.  Get your 14" black velvet and Greek Key ribbons. Use double-sided tape to adhere the Greek Key ribbon to the center of the velvet ribbon. Set aside.
  2.   Get your 12" black velvet and blush satin pink ribbons. Use double-sided tape to adhere the blush ribbon to the center of the velvet ribbon.
  3.   Put double-sided tape at the short edge of the blush/velvet ribbon to create a loop by adhering the other short edge to the tape.
  4.  Pinch the center of the loop to create a bow shape. Secure the center with floral wire.
  5.  Get your 3" section of velvet ribbon and place over the center of the blush pink bow. Secure the ends of the ribbon on the back with hot glue. You have a pretty bow!
Now the rest of the assembly takes place at the chair. Have your hot glue gun handy...

Using the plain black ribbon (or literally any color of non-wired scrap ribbon you have), hang the wreath on your chair at whatever height is appropriate. I used some spare satin ribbon to avoid scratching the finish on my chairs. Secure it with a knot.

To attach the Greek Key velvet ribbon over the ribbon/wreath, create a loop with at least a 1" overlap at the ends and secure with hot glue being careful to not get any on your chair!  If the "tails" from your hanging ribbon are showing, rotate them downward or carefully snip off the edges with scissors.

To hide the seam, hot glue the blush pink bow over the seam. Make any adjustments needed and enjoy your gorgeous chair decor.

And when all the chairs are in a row, it's wreath magic. The Greek Key, florals and shiny ornaments are classy and you can still see the gorgeous fretwork design on the back of my chairs.

Swoon! I really think these were totally worth the time and money. Overall, this project cost me about $15ish since I had a lot of the supplies on hand already, but you can totally make a set of four for under $20 with smart shopping and coupons. For about $4 a wreath, I can't complain.

  5. Monica,
Stunning blush and black decorated wreaths for your counter stools and excellent step-by-step guide... One question. Will you have to cut the Greek key ribbon to take the wreaths off the chairs?

Looking forward to being on the Cozy at Christmas Home Blog Tour with you next week...

    1. Hi Judith! I'll likely just "peel" apart the seam where I hot glued it and save the ribbons for next year's decor, so that I won't have to cut the ribbon. Hope that helps! :)
