How We Chose Curtains for Our New Home

Drapery, window coverings, curtains...whatever you want to call them, they can be expensive!

I've been lucky enough to be able to use standard 84" and 96" curtains at our first house, but in our new place, we have 10 foot ceilings in the dining area and 11 foot ceilings in the living room, so standard drapery wasn't going to cut it.

I searched a lot online and I couldn't find anything that met my criteria, which was:
  • Under $50 a panel
  • No grommets; back tab preferred
  • Black & white
  • Lined

One day, I landed at Bellacor, and they were having a fabulous sale on these black and white striped beauties, so I bought a pair of 96" panels for the dining area and a pair of 108" panels for the living room. They arrived at my door step super fast and packaged well.

I'm trying to include the why of every major purchase in our home that I share on the blog because I hope you will find value or insights into my design thought process. I looked at hundreds and hundreds of curtain panels online, and I even dabbled in thinking about having them custom made with fabric of my choosing. Ultimately, I ended up not going that route because of cost.

So, why black and white stripes? As you and I both know, home decor trends come and go. I wanted panels that would both outlast the trends yet compliment the trends I do incorporate. These drapery panels would look great with florals, polka dots, velvet, burlap, trellis pattern, chinoiserie, and rustic farmhouse. They would also look lovely with ANY color. I mean, any color. The stripes are thick enough that they feel modern while also being classic.

For the money, they definitely exceeded my expectations! They are HEAVY. I thought they'd be lightweight because of the price point, but I was so wrong. And the stripes line up! YAY!

For hanging the curtains, we chose beautiful warm gold drapery/curtain rods and matching finials from Bed, Bath & Beyond (remember to use a 20% off coupon).

We chose the double-rod option and opted for some inexpensive sheers to filter the light beautifully into our space.

Once the curtains were up in both spaces, we were so thrilled with how they tie everything together. They bring in the colors of our alabaster white walls and black tray ceilings. Stripes match with anything, and they'll look great for years to come.

The main qualities of these curtains are:
  • Heavyweight and lined: they do not black out the light, but when the sun is beaming in they block the harshness.
  • They drape beautifully: they have weights in the corner, and truth be told I didn't steam them.
  • The off-white is very nearly white, so they're not beige or ivory at all.
  • The price is super affordable, plus they come in 84-inch, 96-inch, 108-inch, and 120-inch lengths.
  • Bellacor is on Ebates so you can earn 4% cash back on your purchase. I got about $10 back.
  • Bellacor has sales and coupons, so take advantage of their offers.
  • You can hang them via the rod pocket, back tabs (which is what I did), or use drapery rings.
  • The fabric itself is a classic, simple twill. No shiny polyester or faux-satin finish.

We couldn't be happier with our purchase, EXCEPT that one of the 108" panels in a white stripe near the top has a 3" red thread stitched into the stripe. Probably a fluke, and it was past the return period, so I just have to ignore it and not let it bother me.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend these curtains for any space in your home-- they'd look great with any decor style. If these aren't in your decorating wheelhouse, Bellacor has a ton of other options and honestly they seemed to have better variety, lengths and prices than some other shopping sites I frequent. And this is not a sponsored post-- we paid for these ourselves.

    1. Hi Jess! These five windows (3 in living and 2 in dining room) are all in one giant space, which is why I made them all the same.

The rest of the windows in our house are in "rooms" so each room will have its own unique set of curtains depending on the look and feel of that space. Hope that helps!

I personally recommend using the same curtains in an open concept space to help tie it all together.
