Give Back Blog Hop: The Humane Society

I'm proud to take a break from my usual home decor and recipes to spotlight a cause that is very near and dear to my heart-- animals! I don't shy away from professing my love for Pee Wee on my blog, and during the holiday season I know it's easy to get caught up in gifts, but I also feel the holidays are important for helping others and giving back.

This is why I jumped on board for a Give Back Charity Blog Hop when Brynne from The Gathered Home brought up the idea in one of our blogger Facebook groups. I feel it is important to use our influence and blog platforms to help others, so there's 10 of us showcasing our favorite causes and charities today.

The Humane Society has been an organization that Daniel and I have donated to over the years via our local Humane Society chapters (the Gulf Coast and San Antonio area chapters). Living in Beeville, we were smack in the middle of San Antonio and Corpus Christi, so now that we're living in Corpus Christi, we'll be excited to extend our charitable contributions by also volunteering in person.

If someone were to ask me why I feel so passionately about donating to The Humane Society or other animal charities, I'd quite simply say this:

"Saving one animal won’t change the world,
but it will change the world for that one animal."

Animals sadly can't advocate for themselves, and having Pee Wee in my life has taught me so much about love. He's truly a member of our family, and he's an absolute joy to care for. I wish I could give a home to every dog in need, but I can't, so I do what I can to help advocate for their health, safety and well being.

I know for some it's not feasible to adopt an additional animal, but there are so many ways you can help:

  • Donate money: even donating $10 or the cost of a week's worth of not going out for coffee can make such a difference
  • Donate supplies to a no-kill shelter (food, blankets, toys, newspaper, water, or call to see what they specifically need)
  • Donate time: spend an afternoon a month helping out your local shelter
  • Spay/neuter your pets to avoid overpopulation and stray animals
  • Spread the word: Adopt don't shop! So many dogs are stuck living out their days in shelters, and they need loving homes and have affordable adoption fees that include vaccinations and spay/neutering.
  • In lieu of gifts for the holiday or birthdays, ask people to donate on your behalf to the animal charity/shelter of your choosing

Overall, if we all took a stand against animal cruelty, encouraged spaying/neutering, and spread the word about pet adoption, the world could be a better place for our furry friends.

The next blogger in our blog hop is Cassie Bustamante who is also choosing to spread the word about dog rescues. You can check out all of the charities featured today by clicking the links below:

From our family to yours, happy holidays! And remember to bring in your pets and plants when it gets cold this holiday season.

  3. OMG! Peewee is beyond adorable! Rescuing animals is near and dear to my heart, since we have adopted two precious kitties from local shelters in the past several years! I love the ways you've shared to get involved... And I'm trying to work on my husband's opinion on bringing home kitty #3! :D
