Colorful Chic Cinco De Mayo Soiree

Cinco de Mayo is coming up (that’s May 5, y’all), and I have some super simple, beautiful and delicious party décor, food, and drink ideas for you. Partnering up with El Monterey to feature their delicious, affordable, and easy to make Fiery Hot Shell Shockers, Taco Beef & Southwest Chicken Battered Taquitos was a no brainer. And with the main entrée taken care of, it left me plenty of time to focus on making a gorgeous buffet table. Now, I know Cinco de Mayo is on a Monday this year (bummer!), but these ideas come together effortlessly, I promise.

Traditionally, Cinco de Mayo décor is red, white, and green, but I wanted my decor to be super colorful and festive. I picked up a $5 bunch of flowers at the grocery store, and I put my random garage sale/thrift shop vases to good use. I believe pairing eclectic candle holders and vases really creates a visually interesting and stunning centerpiece. Plus, candles spruce up any décor setting.

I also used a napkin on the diagonal to create a table square under the centerpiece. The colors all jive together, and it’s a beautiful way to set the tone for even an informal gathering.

The vibrant flowers really pack a punch of color while also being classy. Flowers are always a good choice for tablescapes.

Once I got my tablescape done, I wanted to focus on putting as much as I could on the table to make it easier for guests. I picked up some fruit flavored sodas and put out my ice bucket so people could create their own fruity concoctions (like sparkling aguas frescas!)

A signature mocktail is a must, and I came up with an awesome margarita mocktail! It has all the notable margarita flavors, but with a twist.

ElMonterey07

Strawberry Limeade Margarita Mocktail Recipe:

-1 can of limeade frozen concentrate + 1.5 cans of water

-Strawberry cocktail mix (I chose a sugar free version)

-5 cups of ice

Blend the limeade, ice, and water in a blender until smooth. Taste it, and if it’s too sweet, add water in 1/3 cup increments until it reaches the perfect sweetness. Pour the slushy mixture into a glass, and SLOWLY pour some strawberry cocktail mix on top.

The strawberry will just float on the top making it a gorgeous, fancy drink. No one will know how easy it was, I promise.

If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can add a chopped, seedless jalapeno to the lime mix for a sweet and spicy drink. Either way, it’s a crowd pleaser and refreshing.

While I am setting up my table and making drinks, I had my El Monterey Taquitos cooking in the oven. They are microwaveable, but I prefer crispy taquitos. While we liked the Fiery Hot Shell Shockers, we all LOVED (and fought over) the Taco Beef & Cheese Battered Taquitos. Oh my gosh—the combination of spices, the seasoned beef, and the crunchy, battered tortilla is over the top delicious. Now some of you may not have a ton of fancy platters to display food, so here’s a tip. Take a simple glass bowl, line with some wax paper, and arrange your food (nicely) in the bowl. Glass always looks upscale, and no one will guess it’s a mixing bowl. And as a bonus, it’s way easier to clean.

I did whip up a few sides to go alongside the taquitos such as guacamole, refried beans, and tortilla chips. I kept it simple, easy to eat, and tasty. The next time I have more of a sit down dinner party, I want to make Enfrijoladas (taquitos in bean sauce). They seem to be a spin on enchiladas, and I love me some enchiladas.

On one table I managed to squeeze in décor, food, drinks, and plates. I feel this makes it easier for guests to graze and mingle in a casual, but beautiful setting.

I embraced the fact that not everything was matchy matchy, and for Cinco de Mayo the focus should be on good food, drinks, and relaxation. Don’t sweat your party planning, especially when you can pick up tasty products from El Monterey that make your life easier. The taquitos were truly a crowd pleaser, as you can see:

I had planned to play Mexican bingo (Loteria), but we all kept eating and talking…so we didn’t get around to playing games. But besides bingo, it’d be fun to set-up an adult pinata filled with Mexican candies!

I hope my simple, colorful, and tasty Cinco de Mayo party helps you with your upcoming Cinco de Mayo celebrations. The most important thing is to have fun with those you love.

  3. We actually eat taquitos about once a week. We have tried all of the varieties, even the new shell shockers. These are great for family get-togethers because they are finger foods that you can eat away from the table.
