I get many e-mails about my honey oak to espresso staining tutorial, and while I’d love to get back to every e-mail…I can’t/won’t anymore. I get a lot and most ask the SAME questions, so here’s an FAQ for you lovely people.
1.) Have you done your kitchen cabinets yet? I’d love to see them!
-Nope! We’ve been focusing all of our effort on finishing up the office/dining room and getting the darn bathroom renovation done. I am planning on tackling our beast of a kitchen sometime in 2013.
2.) What kind of sock? Really? Why? Are you sure? The white kind?
-Bottom line: men’s cotton athletic socks, Hanes or store brand doesn’t matter, and it’s because it simply works. If you want to use something else, that’s cool.
3.) Why General Finishes? Why can’t I use <insert other stain brand here>? Does it really matter?
-Well, this stain works well, is easy to work with, has excellent coverage and I love it. I haven’t had luck with other stains. If you have and want to use something else, that’s great. I only will recommend General Finishes for this specific project. Because it works. So yeah. :)
4.) Does the stain have bad odor or fumes?
-Not that I can recall. I did all my staining in a tiny bathroom space with no windows and am OK.
5.) What kind of poly did you use? How long did you wait between poly coats?
-General Finishes poly in satin. I wanted a non-high gloss finish. If you can’t find this poly, I would recommend any water based poly and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for drying time. I also applied it with a sock.
6.) Has the stain held up?
-Granted I don’t have kids, but the stain has held up to me scrubbing with a Lysol wipe and no issues.
7.) Should I stain my cabinets?
-Up to you! It’s easy. :)
8.) Does this work on bare wood? Why not? Wouldn’t it? Do you know how to make it work on bare wood?
-Personally, I tried this method on bare wood, and I hated the color it came out. However, if you’d like to give it a shot, be my guest, but I truly have no advice for you. Sorry! :-(
9.) Will this work on my white cabinets (or any other color)?
I think it'll work on white paint as long as you're ok with 2 things:
1- you likely won't see a ton of wood grain
2- it may take more coats
Other than that, the process is exactly the same. Again, I’ve never tried it, it’s just what I think. I make NO guarantees.
10.) Do you have any photos showing your vanity completely finished?
-See below:

11.) Amazon is sold out. Where else can I buy it? What if I live in Canada or the moon and can’t find it?
-www.woodcraft.com and of course, www.google.com
12.) How long did you wait to put on the hardware?
-1 full day after my final topcoat.
13.) Will this work on <insert other random piece of furniture here>?
-Why wouldn’t it? Yes, it would. Stair rails, dressers, beds. Stain away.
14.) What if it’s particle board/laminate?
-Treat it the same way. You’ll be fine.
15.) OMG I think I screwed up my cabinets.
-You likely put too much stain. The solution isn’t to put more, it’s to let it dry completely, put less next time, and move on. :)
16.) Are you SURE I don’t have to chemically strip my <insert piece of oak furniture here>?
-I’m positive. People, I am not lying. I see your pins on Pinterest, “I love this makeover! Wonder if it works…?” Um. Yes. It works. I just proved it did. Don’t over think it! :)
If you’d like to see the full tutorial on how to get these results, go here.
If you’d like to see my inspiration for doing this in the first place, go here.
Now, I will also add that as a blogger like myself…I do these tutorials to share knowledge, experience, etc. I don’t get paid to write them, some take me hours upon hours to do (plus take photos, edit photos, write the tutorial, edit, publish, promote) which I know is totally my choice. However, I’ve always been the type to want to share what I know and give my reviews/steps for projects, soooooo…
If you read my tutorial and like it/use it/pin it, please leave me a comment. Comments let me know that my content is being read, appreciated/valued, etc. Right now I am feeling like I just want to delete this entire blog because I am frustrated that my efforts aren’t producing readers. I don’t know if you all are just shy or if my content just sucks. I don’t know. But either way, please remember that bloggers everywhere work really hard to produce their content, so leave us some love. :)
And most of all, happy staining!
**NOTE: I will no longer answer emails about my staining tutorial unless it’s a question I’ve never gotten before or I am in a particulary cheery mood or you really, really kiss up to me via email. Why? Well, because after more than 2,000 emails that I’ve replied to (with very few thank you’s!), and countless hours spent on all three posts, I have said all I can say about it. Sorry guys! <3

They look fantastic! Thanks for sharing! I have oak and I can't decide white paint or dark stain thanks for showing it can come out beautiful without painting it
ReplyDeleteThey look fantastic! Thanks for sharing! I have oak and I can't decide white paint or dark stain thanks for showing it can come out beautiful without painting it
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog via Pinterest-- can't wait to do this to the cabinets in our downstairs bath!! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog thru Pintrest! Love love love it :) You've inspired to potentially (haha, we have a ton of "ongoing" projects) stain my kitchen cabinets.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tutorials and great pics!
I LOVE the new, darker version! So glad you posted it because we're about to do this to a guest bath cabinet area, then to the master... Depending on how they turn out, we may also do it to the kitchen cabinets in a lighter stain! Again, LOVE the new look and the new handles look great as well!!
ReplyDeleteMy test cabinet's first coat is drying as we speak. Thank you for the wonderful tutorial! Your dining room looks fantastic, by the way! Thank you, thank you!
ReplyDeleteHey, girl...just wanted to let you know I love your blog. I read every post...as soon as it's delivered to my inbox. :)
ReplyDeleteMy daughter is using this stain to re-do her bathroom cabinets in the house she just bought. We'll let you know how it turns out.
Thanks for taking the time to write posts...I'm listening, even if I don't comment.
All the best, Tina
PS How are Pee Wee's paws? Did you ever try the salmon oil?

ReplyDeleteDon't be flustered! People are reading and loving your blog! I'm pinning this right now.
ReplyDeleteFound you on pinterest. Lovely re-do!
ReplyDeleteI'm in the process of doing this right now!!! I'm on the second coat, I'm still a little nervous but it looks 100x better than those nasty oak cabinets!!
ReplyDeleteLovely diy. You have inspired me to maybe try and do my vanity which looks almost identical the your before picture. Good job!
ReplyDeleteLove it and thank you! You've given my hubby and I hope that we can make our builders grade oak look so much nicer! Thank you so much!!!
ReplyDeleteFound you on pintrest. can't wait to ty this on my ensuite cabinets, then perhaps my kitchen! thanks for a wondeful DIY :-)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous job! I am so inspired...found you through pinterest!!

ReplyDeleteThank you for this great tutorial! I'm totally going to try this on my kitchen cabinets! This could save be loads of cash! Hope I can get the stain in Canada. :)
ReplyDeleteQuestion - Any secrets to applying the poly? I've had trouble with that in the past. Thanks!
Thanks for posting this!! :) I'll be doing my bathroom cabinets soon!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the pics and tutorial. What color is the door in your bathroom and the trim? I have oak cabinets, doors and trim and am worried that once I do the cabinets that the rest will look out of place. What do you think?

Love this! Thank you so much for sharing. I pinned this on Pinterest and can't wait to try it! :)
ReplyDeleteI hate my kitchen cabinets & really love what you did with your bathroom. I think I'm going to try the bathroom first, then concur the kitchen, since it's a lot more work. Thank you for the lesson. Oh I too also found you on Pintrest.
ReplyDeleteWow! That turned out so nice! We are looking and seriously considering putting in an offer on a house with ALL oak, everywhere :S
ReplyDeleteI was dreading the thought of all that painting, because I personally think it would be a lot messier and time-consuming than staining (especially after looking at your tutorial) ... plus this gives us other options! And would probably look nicer longer since we have two crazy little boys.
Thanks for sharing! Found you on Pinterest (and repinned) =)
Love the difference a little color and a couple of knobs make! Found you on Pinterest, and repinned you to my boards. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to try this, thank you so much!
ReplyDeletePlan on thing this, one questions the doors look different did you add something to them and if so what and how, thank you for this will send you pics :)
ReplyDelete@Shelly- Everything is the same color, what you're noticing is the reflection from the track light in the hallway on the doors. If you look at the first vanity photo in the post, it's clear it's all the same color.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments everyone! If you leave me a comment without an e-mail it's hard to respond!
Thanks so much for sharing!!! We just bought a house (yeserday!!) and we can't afford new cabinets BUT doing what you did IS a great solution!!! I can't wait to try it! thx again!
ReplyDeleteI have wanted to do this for so long! Thanks for the inspiration!! ;)
ReplyDeleteFound this through Pinterest, love the look!
ReplyDeleteSaw this on Pinterest and can't wait to try this in my daughter's bathroom. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLove this. Found it on Pinterest. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteHi Monica, Love the effect you've created. We have kitchen cabinets that are similar and espresso is a color we use all over our house. I found this on pinterest and its been repinned, so people are definitely interested in your blog. Your efforts are much appreciated by many. As for lack of comments, the issue of having to have some kind of 'identity' to 'comment as' may be an issue to a lot of readers. I don't use my google account, I only have one so I can comment of blogs. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteI saw the tutorial pinned by a friend on Pinterest today and the cabinets were so pretty that I decided to read the tutorial (I love to read!) Although I won't be doing my cabinets -- too old and stiff to tackle the job -- I will tell my daughter about it. She frequently paints objects in her house. I just want to say thank you for sharing your experience with the tutorial. You did a great job on your cabinets as well as with the tutorial!
ReplyDeleteI just found this tutorial via Pinterest and I LOVE it! My husband and I just bought our first house and I can totally relate to your cabinet problem. I think I'm going to follow your example: try it in the bathroom and then {perhaps} move on to the kitchen.
ReplyDeleteMy husband is a little nervous about most DIY projects, but when i showed this to him, he got excited. Thanks for a terrific tutorial and a great FAQ post!
Sure do appreciate you and your fab ideas! Thank you for the hard work you put into your blog... it shows!
ReplyDeleteCan I use these same steps to re-stain a dresser and side table?
ReplyDeleteJust found your lovely bathroom vanity transformation on pinterest. Love it! Just gorgeous! Will be checking back for more DIY inspirations/tips. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThe vanity looks stunning! Thank you for the time and effort to write us Q&A and for the tutorial.
ReplyDeleteThis looks amazing! I definitely want to do it in my kitchen, but I'm wondering what to do about the bottoms of the upper cabinets. I think all of the cabinets are laminate, and the bottoms are made from the much lighter, interior material...Any thoughts?
ReplyDeleteWow, just saw this on Pinterest and HAVE to do it! Your cabinet is almost identical to mine, so I have high hopes. Please don't delete it before I have a chance to replicate it! It looks so great, thanks!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to try it out! Looks great!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the inspiration! I'm definitely going to try this out. Are the sides of your cabinets a veneer? I'd love to do this in my kitchen, but I think the fronts/sides of my cabinets are veneer, so I wasn't sure if this would work.
ReplyDeleteAmazing job! You've inspired me to do mine! And - I can't believe people would send you mean emails! I'm so sorry to hear that!
ReplyDeleteI just found your site through Pinterest... I love this idea of staining oak cabinets. Now if I can only get my husband on board!!

ReplyDeleteYou made me totally feel like I could do this--thank you!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! I can't wait to try this, I hate the appearance of my cabinets, but they function so I can't justify the cost of replacing them.
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited to try this!! Thank you for all of the detailed directions, I actually feel like I can do it! haha
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Thanks for sharing, am in the process of picking the right stain for my kitchen and bathroom. A daunting task I have been procrastinating for months.
ReplyDeleteYour blog just gave me the inspiration and encouragement that I needed! Thank you!!

ReplyDeleteThank you for your tutorial! I found it on pinterest and will for sure be using it someday!
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to change my cabinets to espresso for so long. I haven't dared to do it on my own. You made it look simply enough that I'm going to give it a try. Thanks for sharing your info and projects with us!!!!
ReplyDeleteTotally pinning this! I know it'll come in handy when it's time to change the cabinets in the house. THANKS!!!
ReplyDeleteYou inspired me to stain my bathroom cabinets! As I write this I am letting the 2nd coat dry. I followed your directions to the letter and it's turning out beautiful! My biggest problem is that I want to keep going over the stain once I put it on. STEP AWAY FROM THE STAIN ONCE YOU PUT IT ON! That has been my new mantra! I will put the 3rd coat on tomorrow then let it dry for 5 or so days. I am so amazed at how easy it is. There is NO odor whatsoever! The clean up is a breeze. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! My bathroom (will be) transformed! Keep up the inspirations!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tutorial! Pinning it!
ReplyDeleteHi Monica!
ReplyDeleteI've wondered for several years if this would work. Your results are fantastic! Great selection of new drawer/door pulls too. This is a terrific way to update a bathroom.I'll be watching your tutorial.
Thanks very much!
LuAnn
I just found this on Pinterest and can't wait to try it in my master bathroom! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteFound this on pinterest! Last weekend I refinished a credenza - my first ever home decor DIY attempt.... I'm so inspired to try this on my bathroom cabinets! THANK YOU!
ReplyDeletefound this on Pintrest! I'm so sick of my white washed/white man-made marble tops in my bath circa 1996! I've been dying for darker cabinets and new counter top. Can't wait to try this. BTW - Will it work on white-wash?
ReplyDeleteI found this on Pinterest, I have been searching for a way to get my cabinets darker and I'm so glad I came across this! Thanks do much for your tutorial
ReplyDeleteI have the most hideous cabinets in my kitchen, this gives me hope! Thanks for the tutorial!
ReplyDeleteI found your blog via Pinterest and am thrilled! I am so sick of my oak cabinets and want to stain them a darker color. Seeing your before and after photos have given me the courage to try this myself. If it turns out well I will stain all of the railings and banisters in my very oak house! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteJanet
Just found you via Pinterest. I'd love to try this on my bathroom cabinets but am terrified. Maybe some day I'll be brave...
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly what I have been looking for!!! I'm thinking that I will practice in the cabs in my LR before I tackle the BR & kitchen. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tutorial! I used this on a dresser and loved it so much I am doing our bathroom vanity. Also, I did it on the platform bed my husband built and I really love the way it looks on the bare wood. The grain shows through more and it looks spectacular. I would have messed this up big time without your step-by-step, so thanks!!
ReplyDeleteWe've been looking to take our contractor-stock cabinets in two bathrooms a darker color and this is just perfect. Thank you!! Found you via Pinterest and will pin you on my House and Home board!
ReplyDeleteMonica, great idea!! I am definitely going to try this with my kitchen cabinets. Can you please share some images of the back of the doors with the doors open??
ReplyDeleteThank you.
P.S: you can add the Tequila to the list of things to buy :)
Truly wonderful tutorial! Inspired me to do the guest bath and WHOLE kitchen with this stuff!
ReplyDeleteShowing you some love <3 :)

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love the redo and your tutorial!!
ReplyDeleteThis will be super helpful. Have a kitchen two baths with oak cabinetry which I dislike. I am eager to try staining them.
ReplyDeleteThis is the best tutorial I've ever read for staining this type of bathroom cabinet! Thanks so much for the advice and I can't wait to try it! I've lived with the ugly cabinets for ten years, always too timid to DIY, but now I feel I have the information necessary to do it myself! Thank you thank you, thank you! I appreciate your hard work! ReplyDeleteI pinned this - too good not to! Thank you for the tutorial. I might be able to talk Husband in to this!
ReplyDeleteLove this idea! Do you think this will work on laminate cabinets?
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking about going white with my oak cabinets... Maybe rethinking that now -- and this looks SO MUCH EASIER!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you... this is very inspiring!
ReplyDeleteThank you for this post! We followed your directions and this came out great in my mom's bathroom. We just bought a house and this will be the first project I tackle. You cured me of my hatred of oak!
ReplyDeleteVery inspiring! We are buying a house that was built in the 80s and while it's well taken care of, the owners haven't updated the kitchen or bathrooms to modern tastes. Lots of DIY for me! Your tutorial makes it look manageable to do.
ReplyDeleteI'm on my second coat and it's looking fantastic! How much time do you wait between poly coats? Also, how much time until the whole thing is dry? I can't wait to see our finished product. Thanks so much for the tutorial!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the tutorial! I just finished both cabinets in the bathrooms and they look fabulous! Thank you, thank you, thank you. I love your blog.
ReplyDeleteLove it! I just repined your tutorial . Thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for sharing this!! I'll be keeping this tip for when we purchase our first place :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the extra info. I found your original post yesterday and I'm really looking forward to trying this! (found on pinterest and repinned!)
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for a way to modernize my bathrooms and kitchen for the past several years. I think you just did it! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThis is absolutely a wonderful solution to our ugly oak cabinet problem! We bought our house a year ago and thought that one day we'll save enough money to totally tear out all our cabinets and buy dark espresso ones! Alas, I do not think that day will come soon! And today I found your blog! What a wonderful inspiration! Thank you for taking th time to post this! We will give it a go in our bathroom and if we feel we did a good job, we'll move on into the kitchen! Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much ...will try it in my bathroom because of your blog!
ReplyDeleteI just found you.. Great stuff! I have repinned this! Will for sure be trying this. Thanks for sharing! Love it!
ReplyDeleteI have been "dreaming" of doing this for such a long time but did not know where to start. I LOVE your blog. Please keep posting. Your inspiration for me, was found on Pinterest! Keep it up!!
ReplyDeleteFound this on pinterest... Can't wait to try it!!! I've been wanting to do something with our honey oak but didn't want to paint it. Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteI'm loving that before and after!!! I HATE oak finish so it's totally ironic that I'm looking for oak finishes to fix :). Thank you so much for the tutorial!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm seriously considering doing this to my kitchen... I wonder what my husband will think of that!?! Thanks for the info!
ReplyDeletewe are in the process of buying a house and these cabinets are the color i want, but i have been perusing your blog for a couple hours now. totally have pinned this staining process (your bathroom is AWESOME). your whole blog is pretty darn cool. don't delete it :)
ReplyDeleteI followed Pinterest to this tutorial and I really love the transformation of your bathroom cabinet. I'd love to do this on my honey-colored rocking chair, but I'm nervous about all the nooks and crannies. If you have any genius insights in that regard, let me know.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the blog post! I found you on Pinterest & I have done this to my bathrooms & kitchen oak cabinets. So far I love it! The sock method works awesome too, no streaks! I start the topcoat this weekend in my kitchen :-) question: how long did you wait to hang them & put hardware on after your last topcoat? Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteI love the espresso color! Thanks for posting this tutorial. Now I just need to talk my husband into letting me try this! :)
ReplyDeleteI found you on Pinterest :) You were "pinned" on about 5 different boards of people that I know... awesome! :) And I wanted to say I love this! And... I especially LOVE the end where you add "Blogger Etiquette" I need to follow blogs, but just have never gotten it down pat. Maybe I should start with yours? I still can't get over the awesome end :)
ReplyDeleteI found you on Pinterest too! I have never done any "big" DIY projects myself, but I am absolutely thrilled to try this on my bathroom vanity downstairs. I probably never would have tried it if I hadn't found your tutorial. I am one of those people that needs the step by step for reassurance. I'll be checking back repeatedly just to make sure I'm doing it the right way. Thank you SO much for all the time you put in to post this.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I tried staining our fireplace mantel that was oak, didn't turn out great. So, we're starting over, and can't wait to try this! I love your vanity, it's just the color I want!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I tried staining our fireplace mantel that was oak, didn't turn out great. So, we're starting over, and can't wait to try this! I love your vanity, it's just the color I want!
ReplyDeleteKeep up your awesome-ness! I found this pinned and thumbed through your gold mine! Chin up, we're just greedy readers who take your ideas and run as fast as we can to the nearest craft store with cash gripped tight in our sweaty excitement driven shaky fists! I promise, from here on out, i will be sure to take myself down a peg or two and always give some sort of shout out!
ReplyDeleteJust found this on Pinterest, I am adding it to my Winter project list! This is going to save us so much money on staining rather than replacing our ugly oak bathroom cabinets.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I know EXACTLY how you feel! It's so frustrating. Your blog is fabulous! I found your post on staining cabinets on Pinterest and it's exactly what I've been looking for! Thank you SOOOOO much! Our cabinets are the dated orangy oak color...it kills me. This looks like a really easy way to change it up. Thank you for all of your time and effort! I'll be passing it along on Pinterest for you! :)
ReplyDeleteLove,
Natalie from NatSprat.blogspot.com
I got here from Pinterest. Thanks for the great tutorial, I wish I had seen it a month ago. I have spent the last 5 weekends(!) painting my natural oak cabinets white and I've run into problem after problem. If I'd seen your tute (AND had a crystal ball to see how tough my project was going to turn out to be) I'd have switched gears and gone with this beautiful dark stain.
ReplyDeleteI found you through pinterest and will be using your tutorial to start on my house full of honey oak!
ReplyDeleteEverything else I found was full of negativity saying it can't be done, etc so THANK YOU! :)
Thank you so much for your post and tutorial! I will definitely be trying this on our cabinets.
ReplyDeleteI found your cabinets posted on Pinterest. I love the way your project turned out and I want to copy you :). Thanks for posting the how-to's!
ReplyDeleteI understand what you mean about people not saying thank you or not leaving comments. I rarely ever get comments, but the blog counter thing shows I have hundreds of people reading. What's with that?
Followed your blog and started with my bathroom cabinets....just put the last top coat on and the hard part is the waiting to put the new hardware! I loved your blog and this project!
ReplyDeleteJust ordered my stain.... so excited to do our main bath cabinets! thank you so much for all your amazing directions!
ReplyDeleteOMG!! You just saved my marriage. I hate the builders oak in my house and have been dreaming of dark cabinets in my bathrooms and kitchen. Can't wait to start.
ReplyDeleteAdded your blog to my reader. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for this incredible tutorial! I've wanted to update my oak bathroom cabinets, but didn't know where to start. You made it ever so easy! My first coat in the master bathroom is drying as we speak. Can't wait to see the finished results. Thinking of doing the banister as well. Thanks again for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis is so completely awesome! I have honey cabinets all over my house and I have wanted espresso for so long! Sigh. If we can only find the time (with a 2 year old and working full time), I'm totally doing this. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLooks great! I have similar cabinets, and I was wondering about the laminate parts, so thanks for addressing that!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe what good timing it is to stumble across your blog! I am trying to decide what to do with my oak bathroom vanity. It is small, and I am SO COMPLETELY EXCITED about trying your staining method! I will do a before and after pic and let you know how it turns out! Your blog is wonderful! I LOVE LOVE LOVE your dining room!
ReplyDeleteThey look amazing! I hope to do this to my oak cabinets soon! Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing this information...much appreciated!!! Our house came with two different colors of stain on the bathroom cabinets. Can't wait to create a classier look!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the tutorial. Just ordered my stain and topcoat. Can't wait to try it. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteThese look really great. It gives me hope that I can move into a "not quite my dream house" and still make it look fancy.
ReplyDeleteLOVE THIS! Am so going to do this to my ugly oak kitchen cabinets :)
ReplyDeleteLove love love this! Just tried your technique in some old cabinets in our new house and it looks fabulous and I have only done one coat. I have three bathrooms to tackle and a staircase ... Can't wait for the final product! Thank you for sharing! I have stained before, but never would have taken in cabinets without your recommendations/techniques! Keep sharing....great inspiration!
ReplyDeleteAsugirl97@yahoo.com
Looks fantastic! I can't wait to try this in our new house! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your inspiration! I am currently half way through our kitchen, top cabinets are done now moving to the lower ones! It has been a time consuming project ( mainly taking a long time to dry and finding time to work on it when my 1 yr old is sleeping). But it is so worth it, it looks amazing and really makes the kitchen look nice! The only problem I came across was the cabinet doors kept slipping on the painting triangles making scratch marks/ peeling of the stain. I tried many different things but no matter what I did it still slipped even just a little.
ReplyDeleteJust wanna let ya know, we followed your directions to the t and our loving how ours turned out! Doesn't get much more idiot proof if you ask me! Thanks for taking the time to blog this! Made our kitchen and bathroom look fantastic for hardly nothing cost wise!
ReplyDeleteRoxy
I found your blog (I think via Pinterest) and just loved it and I jumped right in. Today I put the first coat of stain on, but before that I actually ripped up the (awful) carpet in our bathroom. Since the floor was bare, I did the staining.
ReplyDeleteI plan to post pictures of the process of my own blog as well as before/after shots. Keep an eye out or I will probably comment when I finally post it so you can see.
Thanks so much for the full explanation. It really helped. I used a different brand of stain by Rustoleum (Kona) and so far so good. I couldn't find the one you used and didn't feel like waiting. I wanted to do this project TODAY :)

Found this on pinterest, thank you so much for not getting discourage and deleting it, I'm sure lots of people are reading your blog as I am, but just don't comment. xo
ReplyDeleteJust getting ready to tackle this same project, so glad to find this on Pinterest! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteFound this on Pinterset and have to ask, is there a tutorial? I read the Q and A's but am wondering, did you have to sand the cabinets?
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait to do this to my cabinets, and THANK you for posting an FAQ on this!
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing!! You have given me hope that our new house with ugly cabinets can be BEAUTIFUL! Thank you for your guidance and tutorial!! Your work is greatly appreciated :)

ReplyDeleteI just read all of your amazing tutorials about doing the gel stain - it's probably the best one I've found out there! (found you on Pinterest) I am nervous to take on this challenge in my kitchen even though we are thoroughly seasoned DIYers. AND my kitchen needs it bad. My kids were playing 'I spy' and my 6yr-old daughter said 'I spy something orange' and finally she told us it was the kitchen cabinets. true story. yikes!!
ReplyDeleteHi there!!! I have maple cabinets that I am going to try this technique on...they are that light color that was so popular in the 90's. I told my husband I would start with the bathroom too!! Thank you so much for taking the time to post this awesome tutorial. When I do it, I'll email you my before/after photos!! Also, I am going to pin a photo to my pinterest board. Keep up the great work!!!

Started this in our bathroom. Overall it looks really good so far (just finished 2nd stain coat), but the laminate on the sides started to peel. We had to rip off a big chunk of the laminate paper and re-stain, but it's so dark I don't think it's going to be all that noticeable. Can't wait to see the finished product!
ReplyDeleteFinished yesterday and I LOVE it! Now I want to do my kitchen cabinets! lol. Maybe I'll do those next summer.
DeleteI also refinished the brass hardware so it is now silver. Found that tutorial on Pinterest as well. It looks great!
DeleteI haven't started on this on my cabinets but I'm going to give it a try in my bathroom. Thanks so much for taking the time to show us all how to do this!
ReplyDeleteFound this through pinterest...and will be showing my husband. He enjoys refinishing things and I love the color of these...so WIN WIN! Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome, thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteI pinned your tutorial. It was awesome! and your writing style is great. I wouldn't have commented if I hadn't read your message at the end of this post, but I'd hate to see you quit since I enjoyed the tutorial! I'll be browsing around for more ideas, too! Thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteJust saw this on Pinterest and it looks fantastic. Can't wait to try it. Afraid it will snowball...now that the laundry room cabinets are done, we have to re-paint, and if I repaint I'll have to do the baseboards, then the floor, then spruce up the utility sink by putting a skirt over it to hide it's ugliness...etc. But I'm inspired...thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteSo I saw this on Pinterest a month ago and excited to finally find something that I can do. I'm about to begin on the project today! Thank you so much for posting this, as others have said, I hate oak cabinets! This tutorial of yours is very useful (especially for those of us who are not experienced in this type of thing.) By the way I also checked your other house projects and they look amazing! You have a keen eye for these things and wished I have the same talent. But fortunately, I don't and will have to settle for dark cabinets and will go on from there. Thank you again! =)
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love this! I pinned it and I can't wait to do this to my kitchen, 3 bathrooms, linen cabinets, and even the cat if I can catch him. I've read a lot of reviews for another product (rhymes with crustnoleum trabinet cansformations) but just wasn't sold on it - too painty, and I really wanted more of a stain. Can't wait to get started. Thank you for posting. I love your projects.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! Saw this pin on a friends board and now have an idea on how to update our old kitchen cabinets pre-market!!! If we get our house on the market soon, this may have to be added to our to do list. Thanks for all the answers and tips. Your cabinet looks great!
ReplyDeleteJust got my first coat on! So exciting, thanks.
ReplyDeleteI somehow ended up here from a reddit thread. If you're doing a lot of handy stuff, feel free to post it to r/DIY and you'll get a lot of traffic on your blog. Nice tutorial, good luck!
ReplyDeleteCame from Pinterest. The makeover it great! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
ReplyDeleteHi Monica, I love your enthusiasm and the way you gave so many little details in the tutorial. Thanks for cheerleading me on to a new project! By the way, your choice of hardware is terrific too.
ReplyDeleteI am BLOWN away by the change in your bathroom cabinets. Can't wait to try it on mine. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh; I can't wait to try this! Saw this pin on pinterest!
ReplyDeleteFound you one Pinterest - and am glad I did! Just tried the General Finishes stain on one cabinet door - think I'll progress to the bathroom vanity and then onto the kitchen!! Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried this yet, but you've given me hope that this is doable. Thank you for the detailed instructions!
ReplyDeleteFound the Pin, marked the blog in my browser's favorites list. I will order the stain tomorrow. I am so excited to try this. Our contractor's grade cabinets are in need of TLC after 9 years. I will be taking before and after pictures for posting on my soon to be blog. (of course I will give props back to you.) My son has finally come into his own and has definte likes and dislikes. He defintely likes this.
ReplyDeleteThanks~Debbie
This is awesome! I have been wanting to redo mine and looking for an "easy" way to do it. Pinning it!
ReplyDeleteWell, I have liked/read/pinned your post and am looking forward to doing this in my bathrooms ASAP! Thanks :)

ReplyDeleteThank you for taking the time to share your work! I originally read your post a few months ago and have been trying to decide if I'm brave enough to tackle my kitchen cabinets (that, I HATE but don't have the money to replace!). Seeing the final finished result on your vanity may have been the kick in the pants that I needed! I hope mine turns out at nicely as yours did!! :)

I am so excited about this project! I went through the process of sanding and staining and sanding and staining our bathroom vanities Ugh! So time consuming and messy...used the same stain ( different brand) and got very different results, so frustrating! My husband and I were looking into the "Transformation" kit but didn't like the painted look. I am looking forward to using your method on my kitchen cabinets. Can't thank you enough for sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteJust did this to our bathroom. So thankful for your awesome tutorial! Would not have had the courage to try it without seeing all of your photos. Thank you!!!!
ReplyDeleteJust finished coat 1!!! I am so excited!!! Your tutorial is saving my whole house and budget!! THANK YOU!!!! I will be telling everyone to come read this!

Love this, love my house but...HATE my kitchen cabinets! I can't wait to start the process of of staining them, and adding hardware! Thanks for shareing! :)
ReplyDeleteI love your vanity. I have used General Finishes stain in espresso on an old dresser that I converted into a vanity for my bathroom. I did use a spar urethane to cover it because of the chances of it getting soaked. The finish has held up and is gorgeous. I have used just about every other type of stain in refinishing projects and would agree that this was very easy to use and gave a beautiful finish.
ReplyDeleteI will DEFINITELY be using your tutorial on this! I have white cabinets, but I'm going to give it a shot! It's exactly the look I am envisioning! Thanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteI have 6 custom-made bookcases I brought home from a lengthy assignment in Indonesia (in the mid 90s) which are a reddish oak color, and I want them to be dark. I'm going to try your method, but I wanted to let you know your FAQ is still being read and helping people! Thank you so much - and you have a new follower.
ReplyDeleteHere"s some love. And a big ole thank you!!!! I have wanted to do a blog too and can feel your pain.
ReplyDeleteI mad e the mistake of not writing down the gel stain brand and picked up Old Masters Dark Walnut at Ben Moore. It did NOT work. Bleh. Going to order your brand and try again.
Hello General Finishes suit types! This girl deserves some sort of thankyou!!!!!
Like!
ReplyDeleteNOOOO...Don't you dare delete this blog or stop all together! I love this and you have given me the inspiration to "make-over" my boring honey oak cabinets. I think this will be my first cold weather project this fall. I absolutely love the color and can't wait to give it a try. One happy reader...:o)
ReplyDeletePlease do not delete! I am ordering supplies tomorrow and I need the tutorial! :)
ReplyDeleteKudos for your beautiful cabinets, but also for speaking your mind! Blogging can be a thankless job, for sure.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, THANKS for the tutorial. I was actually searching Pinterest specifically for a tutorial on how to stain over finished wood, and your bathroom cabinet makeover was about forty out of the first fifty pins. I'm glad I found it; I'm going to use this technique on some cheap-o Craigslist chairs! Now following!

ReplyDeleteI followed your instructions to a "T", and I now LOVE,LOVE my new bathroom!! You saved me money and allowed me to give a completely new look to my boring bathroom. THANK YOU for all the effort you put in to do the instructions. For me, it TOTALLY paid off! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks. You just gave me hope I might have it all done sooner than I was planing. Wit the cost involved, all I need is time. Will try vanity, and than go on with the rest. So glad sanding is not as demanding as I thought :-) Bring it on January !
ReplyDeleteHi I was just wondering if you have a picture of what this stain looks like on bare wood, because I have aquired a entertainment set that I am stripping the paint off of, and the stripper also took off the varnish which I was not planning on happen. So essentially its bare wood. Just wanted to see what I would be dealing with if it was bare before I started, thanks!
ReplyDeleteI found you via Pinterest...so glad you didn't delete due to frustration....it's great info....and you did a great job on the staining ...and the tutorial...
ReplyDeletethanks!!
I just found this on Pinterest, brilliant! I wanted to go dark wood in my master, and now I can do it without paying for new cabinets!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for posting this blog and updating with these comments! It's a real shame people are just spreading this all of pinterest and not giving you any thank yous! I am going to try this over the weekend on a coffee table, and I'm so stoked. I have used old english furniture polish before and it doesn't really cover so well. This product is a great find, and will hopefully (fingers crossed) turn my thrift store find into a fancy pants focal point in my living room!
