Skinnygirl Margarita {Review}

First off, I paid for this drink/cocktail myself, which is great since that means my opinion won’t be skewed or influenced by free stuff.

This evening, my hubby took me to Blockbuster and then to the liquor store, which is pretty much my idea of a fabulous evening. I am easy to please and I love to drink & be at home. Cheap, fun, safe.

I was surprised to see a margarita with the word “Skinnygirl” on it, because let’s face it, margaritas usually pack in a ton of calories. Oh and the salt? Yeah, stretchy pants are needed the next 3 days after having one. Usually, I’d be all for normal margaritas, but now I am in the Weight Watchers groove and lost 3.6 pounds this week, and I don’t want to negate my hardwork and effort, so I bought it. The bottle was $14.29 plus tax and would probably make about 5-6 cocktails if using rocks glasses or skinny pilsners.

This cocktail is made/pimped by Bethenny Frankel.

Here’s the bottle. Pretty, cute, simple.

On the back is some boring drivel about not wanting the guilt, yada yada, it’s all natural, yada yada.

DSC_1108

I got a smidge of kosher salt ready and cut up a lime. (Tip: to get lots of juice out of the lime, roll it around on your counter first!)

DSC_1110

Push lime all over rim of glass, put glass rim into bowl of salt, pour ice into glass, and squeeze lime juice into glass.

DSC_1116

Pour cocktail mix into glass.

Garnish with lime, add a straw and away to Mexico you go…

DSC_1120

Yeah, away to Mexico you go for a BETTER margarita.

This stuff tastes like crap. I ended up adding a splash of Sprite Zero to it to give it some sweetness & fizz because honestly the cocktail on its own tastes like Alka-Seltzer and tequila. I knew it was all natural with agave and tequila, but holy moly, this stuff is awful. Didn’t Bethenny taste this drink before selling it? Because this tastes NOTHING like a margarita. At all.

I give this drink 2 thumbs down. I do have an idea of how to use this as part of a low-calorie cocktail, and I’ll bring that recipe to you within a week or so after I perfect it. Because, hey, I have a lot of this junk left to finish.

Have any low-calorie beer or cocktails you rely on to keep you buzzed and healthy? Do share!

FYI: 1 serving of this is 100 calories/2 Weight Watchers points.

  1. Awww, I'm so disappointed! I really was hoping that someone had found a way to make a good margarita (why can I never spell this word right?) without all the guilt, calories and bloating!

I'll wait to pick any up until I see your next post on your better cocktail with this mix!

    Thank you!

  2. Man that was a waste of money! lol Ok so my all time favorite margarita is a HUNGRY GIRL recipe ( I think that is where I saw it originally??)

1 package Crystal Light lemonade mix- prepared with water
1 shot of your favorite tequila
LOTS of fresh lemon or lime juice

I pour crystal light into whatever glass I am going to use to measure it- then mix in lemon/lime juice. I add all of it to a shaker- add in tequila; shake well and add to glass :) Oh and this is only 2 WW points! :)

  3. Hi Monica! I came over from twitter to say hi!
In the past, I will make a wine spritzer with my favorite wine at the moment and diet sprite. Mix one part to one part. Not bad! Don't know any calories counts though, sorry!

  4. Here from Twitter too, thanks for the warning. I'll stick to wine spritzers too! Love Margaritas but like them without the salt, on the rocks. Looking forward to your low cal version. Although the CL version sounds worth a try.

  5. That was the best review I think I have ever read. I was all geared up to go buy the stuff, you had me hooked. AND boom… down that hope went!

Thanks for the review, and for saving us some cash and disappointment.

I think you should go get your money back!

  9. Take this whole post over to Associated Content or someplace like that--very well written. You took the words right out of my mouth. I really wanted to like it but this drink was really terrible.

  10. FINALLY - a review where someone agrees with me. I thought I had a bad bottle. Then I thought, maybe it is just meant to be a mix and I have to add other stuff to it. But whew! It's not me. That stuff is nasty!

  11. I tried this last fall as well and also hated it. It just tasted watered down and bland.... not tasty.

  12. I just opened my first bottle of Skinny Girl and thought maybe this bottle of REALLY BAD margarita had somehow mistakenly made it through the inspection process and that it was actually drain cleaner. Your review sadly confirms that it's just a terrible margarita. This does not even remotely resemble any margarita I have ever had (and I have had many...) and I can't believe that anyone would ever buy it again. I doctored it with Splenda and extra lime just to get it down. Wouldn't want to waste $12.99... I wish I had read your review before buying it. Thanks for your review!

  13. AGREED. I was so looking forward to this, since there is always a glass of it or the bottle shown on the show...but, YUCK. It was a cross between drinking salt water and windshield washer fluid (not that I drink windshield washer fluid...but what I imagine it tastes like). So disappointing. It's a good price and decent in the calorie department but that is IT.

  14. Thanks for your review. My girlfriend is about to have her baby and bought two bottles for celebrating. I love margaritas but the calories and sugar/salt are the worst. If anyone knows how to make a killer low calorie margie, let me know, cause its hard to do. The bobs sugar free is nasty too...way to sweet with a horrible aftertaste.
Thanks for sharing and not letting me waste my money!

  15. After watching her show (I think her drinking her own drink was on every episode or that's all she spoke of) I asked my husband to stop and buy some, so that I could try it. WOW did this taste horrible! i cannot believe she and others rave how delicious her drink is, because that's from the truth. I wish I would have read this review prior to purchasing it. I don't want to waste money, so I've been forcing my husband to finish it, lol.

  16. I've been reading the reviews on SGM & I won't waste my $$!! Thank you all!! I have a blog here too. It's called Life How Quick It Goes By.

Thank you all for your honest opinions.

  17. Skinnygirl Margarita is so disappointing! Lucky for Bethany she sold her company before everyone had a chance to try it and realize that it is disgusting! All of my family and friends felt the same way...Did anyone working with her taste the stuff? I agree with the comment that it tastes like a combination of Alka-seltzer and Tequila! Perfect description!

  18. Ugh! I really like Bethenny Frankel I have been wanting to buy her Skinny Girl Margarita for months. Today is my birthday so my husband surprised me with a bottle. I was so excited...until I tasted it...yuck nothing like a margarita I would rather drink half of a regular margarita than this. I will save the bottle but I can't believe all the hype for a terrible taste. I really wanted to like this/support girl entrepreneurial spirit but can not do it boohoo for my birthday drink:{

  19. Your description of Skinny Girl Margarita is spot on. I bought this stuff full of high hopes and quite frankly the color should have been my first clue. All taste has been removed. It was absolutely dreadful.

  20. This is the worst bottle that I have ever paid 12.99 for. I drank it by mixing it with orange juice , more tequila , Ice, salt, and lime. What a waste of money.

  21. I wish I had seen this blog before I spent $15.95 on that bottle of nastiness. After all the hype I had heard about it I had expected much, much more. I've heard the Jose Cuervo light margarita is supposed to be good. Gonna try that next!

  22. I recently bought Skinnygirl Margarita to try on a whim. I was greatly disappointed. It tasted something like a vat of salt water with a melted Barbie swirled in and sprinkled with tequila scented bath salts. Life is too short for bad cocktails. Next time I'll have the real deal and spend 20 more minutes at the gym. In the words of a very wise woman, "Only dogs love bones". Drink up ladies and enjoy life. Men appreciate a real woman and not a skinny girl.

  23. Yes they do! A few extra pounds is better for you than being anorexic. Bethenny doesn't look healthy....maybe too many Skinny Girl Margaritas?

  24. It tasted like something out of a House Hold cleaner. Lemon Pledge, Perhaps? What a joke. I'll opt for the real thing.

  25. I wish I would have seen all the reviews before I spent $14.99 for my bottle. I also thought I got a bottle that had gone bad. Mine taste like vinegar.

  26. I, too, enjoy Bethany. And I was so looking forward to this cocktail and for months could not find it. So, I created my own skinny girl...

Shot of vodka into a tall glass (Tom Collins glass). Fill it with good ice add soda water and a splash of cranberry juice or crystal light. Or favorite mixer flavor....I was thinking you could do a margarita the same way. But use crystal light lemonade splash of orange juice and tequila and squeeze of lime. I'm gonna try it. Thanks for the reviews. You saved me from a disappointing Saturday nig

  27. I have been looking for validation that i am not CRAZY and Skinny Girl Margarita mix does taste like crap!! My sister bought two bottles weeks ago and we both couldn't believe that she actually had someone pay her $120 million for the right to produce and sell this product. I don't know if your sense of taste is off, Frankel but i would never buy this product again!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Demeter Financial Group is the group that handled this transaction. There was never any monetary amount published regarding what the selling price was. You have to remember that the media will take 500K & turn it into something that it's not. If you really want to know anything about anyone living in NYC check out NYC Department of Finance. Go to ACRIS. It will list peoples property & so forth.

  29. I had seen this at Raleys and from watching her show thought I shoudl try it. Raleys was out, but in a visit to a Costco found it there for $9.99. So grabbed one. Husband said get 2! So I did. HUGE Mistake! It smells like a marg. but the taste is lacking. Too salty and prety much exactly what he review says. I wish I lived close to costco to return it.

My all time favortie marguarita recipe is buy frozen limenade or the barcardi lime in the freezer section (like the frozen oj containers), add to blender, then if you want one that will knock your socks off, fill that same container the lime mix came in with tequila, if you dont want to knock your socks off add less. Then add ice and blend. Fabulous! Drinking and low calorie doesnt sound right. Enjoy it!

  30. Agreed. This has fewer calories because it is essentially a watered-down margarita. That would also have fewer calories and would also taste terrible, like this drink does.

It was $18.49 at my local store in NYC. I would much prefer a shot of tequila, some fresh lime, and bit of agave.

  31. I purcahsed this last night and I am pissed!! I might have to just toss it and continue to drinking jose cuervo golden margarita.
